Your Treatment Plant Needs Air to Work

The air blower is the heart of your treatment plant. It pumps oxygen into the treatment chamber, keeping the bacteria alive that break down waste. When the blower fails, the bacteria die, treatment stops, and raw or partially treated sewage can enter the environment.

Similarly, the effluent pump moves treated water out of the system. When it fails, water levels rise, alarms trigger, and eventually the system backs up into your home.

Both need prompt attention when they fail. The longer you leave it, the more damage to your system โ€” and the more expensive the repair.

Warning Signs Your Blower or Pump Needs Replacing

๐Ÿ”ด Alarm Going Off

The most obvious sign. Your treatment plant alarm means something has failed โ€” usually the blower or pump. Don't ignore it.

๐Ÿ”‡ Complete Silence

No humming from the blower unit? It's either stopped completely or the power has tripped. Either way, it needs checking urgently.

๐Ÿ“ข Loud or Unusual Noise

Grinding, rattling, or buzzing that's louder than normal. The diaphragms or bearings are worn and the blower is close to failure.

๐Ÿ’จ Weak Air Output

Blower running but barely producing bubbles in the tank. Worn diaphragms or a failing motor โ€” reduced treatment capacity.

๐Ÿฆจ Bad Smells

Foul odours from around the treatment plant. The system isn't aerating properly, so waste isn't being broken down.

๐Ÿ’ง Waterlogged Ground

Wet patches or standing water around the system. The pump isn't moving effluent out, causing overflow.

Diaphragm Kits

Before your blower fails completely, a diaphragm kit replacement can extend its life by 2-3 years. The diaphragms are the rubber membranes inside the blower that compress and expand to push air. They wear out over time and should be replaced every 2-3 years as preventative maintenance.

A diaphragm kit costs a fraction of a full blower replacement. We recommend including it as part of your annual service.

Pump Replacement

Treatment plant pumps โ€” including submersible effluent pumps, dosing pumps, and lift station pumps โ€” also wear out over time. Signs include:

We supply and fit replacement pumps for all treatment plant brands. Most replacements completed same visit.

What to Do Right Now If Your Alarm Is Going Off

  1. Don't panic โ€” the system has buffer capacity. You have time.
  2. Check the power supply โ€” has the breaker tripped? Is the plug in? Sometimes it's simple.
  3. Listen to the blower โ€” is it silent, noisy, or running normally?
  4. Reduce water usage โ€” limit showers, dishwasher, washing machine until it's fixed.
  5. Call us on 086 419 8724 โ€” we'll diagnose over the phone and arrange a visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my treatment plant alarm going off?

Usually a failed air blower or pump. The alarm tells you the system can't aerate or move wastewater properly. Other causes: power supply issues, float switch failure, or tripped breaker. Call 086 419 8724 โ€” we can often diagnose over the phone.

How long does an air blower last?

Typically 3-5 years. Premium models may last longer. Replacing diaphragm kits every 2-3 years extends blower life significantly. Annual servicing catches wear early.

Can you replace my air blower the same day?

In most cases, yes. We carry common Secoh, Charles Austen, and Hiblow blowers on the van. For less common models, we source within 1-2 days.

Should I replace the diaphragm kit or the whole blower?

If the blower motor is still running smoothly and it's under 4 years old, a diaphragm kit is usually the better value. If the motor is noisy, overheating, or over 5 years old, full replacement is more reliable long-term.

Is it urgent if my blower stops?

Yes, but you have some buffer time. Most systems can cope for 24-48 hours without aeration, but treatment quality drops immediately. Get it sorted within a day or two to avoid bacterial die-off and system failure.
